Read-A-Thon

The Foundation is pleased to sponsor a fundraiser that fosters our students love of reading. As elementary students read and record their pages, they raise money from sponsors. The Foundation's Read-A-Thon helps to raise funds to support Foundation programs including Opportunity Grants for Teachers, Kids in Community Service Grants for students, visiting authors and musicians, scholarship funds for summer school as well as other important programs throughout the school year. The readers from every school are recognized with prizes and the school with the highest percentage of readers is awarded the highly coveted Read-A-Thon trophy.

Indian Trail School Wins 112 Education Foundation Read-A-Thon

As the Read-A-Thon program saw a 32% increase in participants this year, Indian Trail School has received the Read-A-Thon trophy from the 112 Education Foundation for the second year in a row. Students were asked to track their reading from March 5 thru April 9. District-wide, participation rose to 46% (from 34% in 2009). In all, students collectively read 1,813,448 pages.

This year the Foundation also recognized the school with the greatest increase in readers. With a 169% increase in participants over last year, Sherwood School—which had 80% student participation, the highest overall in the district—was awarded a Certificate of Achievement and a donation to its IMC.

At all schools, classrooms with the highest number of pages read per class size were awarded a Popsicle party. Other prizes included a free miniature golf game from the Park District of Highland Park and a coupon for a free book from Borders Bookstore of Highland Park. In addition, at each school, the student in each grade with the highest number of pages read received a 112 Education Foundation t-shirt that said, “I gave 112% Effort.”
